I often am asked how I got into my line of work. How did you start? And for me it began in my teens. I had a spiritual awakening at 13 and things have never been the same.
But the one thing I have realised on my journey is that it’s not about becoming more, adding more things to myself, accumulating titles, or achievements. It’s about stripping it back. It’s about simplifying it.
If someone was to ask me, what is the gold nugget, the jewel of wisdom that would lead to a happy and fulfilled life, I believe that this might be it.
So many of us believe that we need to be more. And this is such a trap. This leads to anxiety, depression and is a rabbit hole that has no end.
Sometimes when we feel inadequate or that we are lacking in some way, we might think that if only we had certain things in our lives, this would make us better. If we had more certificates or qualifications, a newer car, a house in a better neighbourhood, a better partner, more friends, or a more confident disposition, this would bring us happiness.
But it doesn’t. It’s not about adding to ourselves. It’s about stripping back. Stripping back all the things we have come to believe about ourselves about who we need to be. It’s about stripping back the expectations we have taken on. Letting go of the measuring stick we have been carrying around and embracing ourselves as we are. It’s about stripping back the regrets and the incompletions, so that what we are left with, is ourselves; the jewel of the universe, this pure, radiant, exquisite light.
To believe that we are enough as we are right now can be hard to absorb. It can be hard to truly accept. And yet it is this knowing that will enable us to bring in wonder, grace and beauty into our lives. To be who we are, without needing to add anything is the greatest gift we can give ourselves.
